About the town

The Railway Town That Refused to Stand Still

Crewe is one of Cheshire’s most fascinating towns — a place built entirely by the railways in the 1840s that has been reinventing itself ever since. Today it is home to Bentley Motors, a bold £100 million regeneration programme, a thriving independent business community and one of the most important rail junctions in the UK.

The name ‘Crewe’ comes from the Old Welsh word criu, meaning ‘weir’ or ‘crossing’ — fitting for a town that has always been about connection. In 1831 it was a hamlet of just 70 people. By 1871, the population had exploded to 40,000 as the Grand Junction Railway transformed the landscape and created one of England’s most remarkable industrial towns almost from scratch.

Today Crewe is a town on the move again. With major investment in its town centre, a growing arts and hospitality scene and ambitions to become the Best Small City in Europe by 2050, there has never been a better time to be part of the Crewe story.

Built by the railways

From Hamlet to Railway Capital of the World

Crewe’s story is unlike any other town in England. It did not grow gradually over centuries — it was deliberately built, almost overnight, by the power of the Victorian railways.

1837

The Grand Junction Railway arrives

The Grand Junction Railway chooses Crewe for its locomotive works and station, transforming a quiet farming hamlet into one of England’s most important industrial centres within decades.

1840s

A town is built from scratch

Joseph Locke designs an entirely new town around the railway works. Streets, housing, schools, churches and even a doctor’s surgery — all funded by the railway company.

1938

Rolls-Royce Merlin engines

During World War II, Crewe’s Pyms Lane factory assembled the first Rolls-Royce Merlin engines — the power behind the Spitfire and Hurricane. After the war, production switched to luxury cars.

1998

Bentley Motors

When Rolls-Royce and Bentley split, the Pyms Lane factory became exclusively Bentley. Today around 3,500 people build some of the world’s most prestigious cars right here in Crewe.
